Customs Information
Because of heightened security, information on crossing the U.S. – Canadian Border seems to change frequently; up to date information is available at the Canadian Border Services website (http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca) and at the United States Customs and Border Patrol website (http://www.cbp.gov/). Be aware that proper identification is necessary for all people on board, including children. Passports and the Nexus program make checking in or out much easier. Information is on the websites.

ENTERING CANADA
When entering Canada or re-entering the U.S., please remember that only the captain can leave the boat to check in – everyone else stays aboard until the release is given. The hassle and paperwork and fines are not worth being in a hurry.
A release number will be given to you by Canadian Border Control and by U.S. Border Patrol; log this number with the date, time and place where the vessel reported. Keep this in your log book for at least one year.
If you arrive in Canada aboard a private boat, you must proceed directly to the nearest designated telephone reporting marine site. Upon arrival in Canada, the master of the boat must report to the CBSA by calling 1-888-226-7277. The master of the boat will provide details of the voyage, the passengers and their declaration. No one except the master may leave the boat until authorized to do so by the CBSA. As proof of presentation, masters will be provided with a report number for their records. Masters must provide this number to a border services officer upon request. You do not have to report to the CBSA when you leave by private boat unless you are exporting goods that need to be documented. To get a list of the designated telephone reporting marine sites, call 1-888-226-7277 before you arrive in Canada (This paragraph copied from the Canadian web site on Jan 5,2010)
