I posted this on the Tulip thread also, but: Tim Childs is looking for a ride for the Tulip Regatta. We haven't sailed together (I don't think!) but I remember that he sailed with Leo so I'd say he's skilled and well-trained crew!

Thanks for the warm welcome. Can't wait to go sail the new boat.

I heard the boys hit 19 knots with the #3. Sound like Wild Rumpus was a wild ride.

New foredeck hatch is in and I would post a pic. But the site only allows me 2.29K because I've already used 497.71K

Anyone know how to fix this???

Fixed it- you have to go into manage your attachments and delete exisiting attachments to regain space. I don't know why it saves you attachmnets, but it does

Here's the Hatch

Southern Straits by the numbers (emphasis on NUMB)
1 great boat
2.7 miles of racing
3 great travel meals for delivery prepared by shore support crew, (did you know Vancouver has an IKEA)
4 solid crew Thanks Chris and Kyle of Emoyeni, Steve and Tim
5 Plastic Easter eggs found in clogged bilge pump hose
132 miles of deliveries (see2.7)
19.8 on fun meter, reefed main, storm spinnaker, crew at back of bus
22 hours of delivery; fun on way up, not so fun on way home.... 14 minutes on race course.
Cool to see ICON then Passepartout head out across start line.
Future planning:
Bolt don't just clamp outboard on, twisting in heavy seas caused it to nearly invert while still running, yikes!
Goggles, probably ski type for driver
Extra pairs of heavy gloves, also the marsupial pouch by KAM gear helped
Canvas flap for companionway
Better reefing set up, lots of boats could use this.
No wipe outs, nothing broke, I'll say I'm a Happy Skipper definitely put West vancouverYC @ Fishermans Cove on your list, beautiful place wonderful people.

So Cookie Monster is mostly ready and getting new standing rigging today and tomorrow. All in all it has not been too bad as projects go.

Foils are now faired and at about 95% of perfect
Sanded all the old bottom off and redone with VC performance epoxy
Removed misc deck hardware and rebeded for race configuration
New graphics (Jolly Mon Marine services, great job Steve)
New Standing rigging (NW rigging, nobody does it better)
Had to re-rig a few funky things on the mast and add Dyneema lifelines

I paid 5,000 and reciepts total about another 2,000. Not counting the man (and women) hours of myself and the crew, it is a pretty reasonable boat for the money.

There is a SC27 sitting at North Harbor that Colin has for sale and couuld easily be up and running for about the same.

Pretty cheap to get into a OD fleet of great boats and fun people.

Who's going to be the next one to jump in??

Chuck

PS- I am taking all 21 bags of sails out on Saturday to see what I am keeping and what is just extra. If anyone needs some sails let me know

Pretty cool idea there - What all needs doing?

Hi Chuck - This little SC27 fleet you all started has got some real merit. It's the best reason by far for someone to consider finishing this other boat. Very cool.

Yep - And that can be certainly done, already know a guy keen to take something like that on, he is very keen to learn sailing too.

I may consider the boat if the to-do list is not just completely ridiculous. What all has to come next - replacement deck, hardware, rig and sails? Yikes. A turn-key boat could be a lot smarter... SR

Hey Newbie!! (and we know who you are)

Welcome. Fortunately the requirements here for newbies are different than SA!!lol

I can show you the boat when you come up Saturday.

As for the fleet, this is all Steph's fault. She talked Andy into selling the Moore and then it was all downhill after that. So far, I am just amazed how much it has taken off in such a short time.

This should be a spectacular summer of sailing (and getting beat up by a gurl!!!)

Sorry, I have been doing the teaching thing.

Yes, lots of paint stripping (I have done the bottom and some of the deck) the rig is ready to go, thanks to my friends at 2901 T ave. Yes you need hardware but we have some decent sails. I am keeping the trailer for the new toy, and yes I would like to keep it in our fleet---the joy of being beat by a boat you used to own, I cant wait...

Come by on Sat. I will be on something green....

It sure sounds like confirmation the boat is actually available for sale, that's a great start.

Too bad about the trailer, maybe the green machine can be had instead? Just kidding.. i think.

Anyway, thanks - I will try swing by the club after 5pm Saturday, maybe Chuck can get us together. Please have no worries about getting beaten any time soon! - Cheers

What do you guys pay for moorage during race season, and is any available?

Boat is sitting on a trailer now and can stay there till I haul Shock at the end of October

My slip cost $215 a month plus some taxes, no power. I have a spare slip in about a month.

Wow- What a weekend. 9 Santa Cruz 27's duking it out on the start line. Great racing and great boats. I had moments where the boat felt very fast and then I would do something stupid and slow it down. This is going to be a fantastic group to sail with. Many thanks to Walt and company for putting on a great event.

Gotta give a shout out to the Rumpus Capt and crew
Geoff Bow
Steph helm
Laura champagne(congratulations on your plans) and all around
Audrey pit
Marcy mid deck
Brendan mast
Andy and Karen strings
gusting 25 to 30 flattened main and 3 upwind, weather mark a rocky hoist and the sleigh ride was on, 14-15 sustained planing, small lull behind barge then major puff, probably time to douse before we have hike up the beach and catch Guemes ferry home, sent crew forward to gather it up steered a little deep caught a funky wave and blammo adios to another wind arrow, brendan gets kudos for hanging on tight, spinnaker was a lttle damp and Celebration was gaining fast. Solid beat and wavy upwind to the finish. A real testament to the boat we had a very novice crew and the boat just does it's thing and smiles all around.
Thanks to Scott Soes for Rc duty this series

Just wated to bump this thread back to the top and add a couple of things learned I learned at Nationals.
1. With max forestay length, you need to max out your backstay in anything over 5 kts. I am going to tinker with shortening it a bit and trying to find a balance.
2. Sailing deep- in all but the lightest of breeze, we were able to sail with the masthead fly pointing no deeper than the guides and still make gains
3. Play your backstay a lot. I was working it constantly in the puffs as my trimmer worked the traveler (we were vang sheeting)
4. Adjustable jib cars- These let us hang in on the weather legs with boats with much, much better sails. Being able to ease the car back and depower in the puffs was a huge advantage.

In this venue, we had puffs that would roll down the lake at nice angles. I had eyes out of the back of the boat to tell me where and when and we jibed to position ourselves for them. On the weather legs we did the same and used some local knowledge picked up from having the full crew there two days before for practice (thanks again to my rock star sailors)

We took an old boat with a borrowed #1 that was nice and otherwise 10 year old sails and held our own against some pretty good sailors. I have nothing but respect for the efforts of my crew (especially you Sarah). We sailed with 6 which the boat seems to like. I can explain the choreography of movement if anyone is interested. it was actually quite smooth once we figured it out

Seriously, you people need to beg borrow or steal one of these boats and get out on the water. I have never had this much fun sailing. Ever.

SC27's ROCK!!!

PS- You have one year to get ready for Nationals in our neck of the woods. Better get started!!

Some thoughts on SC27's-

With the Ballenger mast plate, you can almost stand and lower the mast by yourself.

The hoist in A-town works great for dry sailing these boats

There are several that have been rebuilt and there is starting to be a real wealth of knowledge in this area

Ideally suited for 5, but sail better with six. Three go around the mast on tacks and it can be a very smooth activity. One in the pit (must keep their head down)and two in the back

Setting up so backstay/mainsheet/traveler/jib lead are readily controllable makes them a dynamic boat to sail

So- who's the next owner going to be here in A-town???

Or owners (plural) A town has a history of boats under fractional ownership. Grafix, Syndicat, Handyman, Solitaire, Hoerndag, Cat Sass. A SC-27 can be overnited, good for crabbing, race around the buoys, trailered or Swiftsure and beyond. It can be motorsailed with a storm jib into 40+ winds.Of course it is not the only boat capable of this and many do some of those things better. But a reasonably priced family truckster that can surf into the teens is good value in my opinion.
CONS: old, balsa core(good and bad traits here) big kites and headsails (again good and bad trait) most need work, but many boats in this price range do also, odd colors, no standing headroom, porta potty( could be upgraded, Grafix did), not much storage space unless modified...
If you're going to buy one get an expert opinion so you go in with an idea of what you're getting

Ballenger mast plate not required if Cookie Monster Capt and crew are in town, but yes much easier!!!
Hoist works great maybe overstatement, still improving, I would use the word serviceable currently
